Bayou Country.

Twisting and turning through the shallow swampy channels, it took Bobo over an hour to get to Angelique’s house in the bayou. The bayou boatman tied the boat up at the end of Angelique’s new dock her sons had built. “You want me wait for you, Mr. Ranger?”

“Yes, keep the boat here, Bobo. I won’t be long. You can come inside if you want to.”

“Bobo, wait here.”

“Okay.” Luke stepped out of the boat and strode up the incline to Angelique’s bungalow. Her two sons, Marc and Luc, had built her a new house after the shack she used to live in succumbed to the damp weather and was ready to fall apart.

He knocked on the door, and Marc opened it. “Hey, Luke. Didn’t expect to see you here. Come in.”

Luke stepped inside, and the smell of crawfish boiling on the stove permeated the air. “Smells good in here.”

“Yesterday’s catch,” said Marc. “My brother is out in the piro upriver.”

Claire sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee and talking with Angelique while she fed his son his morning bottle. Luke pulled up a chair and sat down. “I know you believe you were doing the right thing by bringing Forest here, Claire, but Misty and I are his parents, and you overstepped.”

Claire arched an ebony brow. “You and Misty are his parents, but I am his grandmother. That holds weight too.”

“So be his grandmother. Love him. Spoil him. Teach him things. But from now on, you don’t make decisions about his future and his safety. It’s up to Misty and me to protect him. I’m taking him with me. I’ll find a safe place until Misty clears up her latest little problem.”

“It’s not a little problem,” snapped Claire. “Claudette’s coven is a huge problem that could become very dangerous before it’s resolved. That’s why we left with the baby. It only made sense to remove him from the danger.”

“Your intentions were good, Claire. I realize that, but it’s not your place or your decision. I’ll protect my son if the need arises. Now, if you ladies want a ride back to your vehicle, you should come to the boat. Bobo’s waiting at the dock.”

“My boys be home wid me,” said Angelique. “I stay here for now.”

Luke nodded. “Would you get Forest ready to leave please, Angelique?”

“Did you talk this over with my daughter?” asked Claire.

Luke chuffed at the indignation of his mother-in-law. “I gave her exactly the same consideration the two of you gave me.” He stood up and followed Angelique into the bedroom.

Together they packed up Forest’s belongings and bundled him up for the trip in the boat. It was always cold and damp on the river, especially in February.

When they headed out the door, Claire was waiting on the porch. “I’m not happy you’re doing this. But if you’re taking Forest, I might as well go home and help Misty. She has her hands full with Claudette Bordelon.”
