Bayou Country.
Twisting and turning through the shallow swampy channels, it took Bobo over an hour to get to Angeliqueâs house in the bayou. The bayou boatman tied the boat up at the end of Angeliqueâs new dock her sons had built. âYou want me wait for you, Mr. Ranger?â
âYes, keep the boat here, Bobo. I wonât be long. You can come inside if you want to.â
âBobo, wait here.â
âOkay.â Luke stepped out of the boat and strode up the incline to Angeliqueâs bungalow. Her two sons, Marc and Luc, had built her a new house after the shack she used to live in succumbed to the damp weather and was ready to fall apart.
He knocked on the door, and Marc opened it. âHey, Luke. Didnât expect to see you here. Come in.â
Luke stepped inside, and the smell of crawfish boiling on the stove permeated the air. âSmells good in here.â
âYesterdayâs catch,â said Marc. âMy brother is out in the piro upriver.â
Claire sat at the kitchen table drinking coffee and talking with Angelique while she fed his son his morning bottle. Luke pulled up a chair and sat down. âI know you believe you were doing the right thing by bringing Forest here, Claire, but Misty and I are his parents, and you overstepped.â
Claire arched an ebony brow. âYou and Misty are his parents, but I am his grandmother. That holds weight too.â
âSo be his grandmother. Love him. Spoil him. Teach him things. But from now on, you donât make decisions about his future and his safety. Itâs up to Misty and me to protect him. Iâm taking him with me. Iâll find a safe place until Misty clears up her latest little problem.â
âItâs not a little problem,â snapped Claire. âClaudetteâs coven is a huge problem that could become very dangerous before itâs resolved. Thatâs why we left with the baby. It only made sense to remove him from the danger.â
âYour intentions were good, Claire. I realize that, but itâs not your place or your decision. Iâll protect my son if the need arises. Now, if you ladies want a ride back to your vehicle, you should come to the boat. Boboâs waiting at the dock.â
âMy boys be home wid me,â said Angelique. âI stay here for now.â
Luke nodded. âWould you get Forest ready to leave please, Angelique?â
âDid you talk this over with my daughter?â asked Claire.
Luke chuffed at the indignation of his mother-in-law. âI gave her exactly the same consideration the two of you gave me.â He stood up and followed Angelique into the bedroom.
Together they packed up Forestâs belongings and bundled him up for the trip in the boat. It was always cold and damp on the river, especially in February.
When they headed out the door, Claire was waiting on the porch. âIâm not happy youâre doing this. But if youâre taking Forest, I might as well go home and help Misty. She has her hands full with Claudette Bordelon.â
